The OpeningBid art price database
OpeningBid is an auction price database for art and design. It holds past results and upcoming lots from hundreds of auction houses, with an independent Fair Estimate and free artist alerts. This page explains what is in it, how we count, what it costs, and how it compares with the other main art price databases. Figures are dated so you can check them.
What is in the database (as of 19 October 2026)

|---|---|---|
| Auction lots | 14,226,862 | [1] |

Scope. Fine art and design only: paintings, works on paper, prints and multiples, photographs, sculpture, and design objects. We do not cover wine, watches, jewellery or cars.
Price basis. Each price is labelled as hammer or premium-inclusive, because houses publish different bases. Prices are stored in the sale currency and converted for display.
Lower-value lots are included. About 40% of the sold lots in the database with a recorded price made under US$500.[2]

How we count and check the data
- Sources. Catalogues and published results from the auction houses' own websites, captured as each sale is announced and again after it closes.
- One work, many sales. We link repeat appearances of the same work across sales and editions, so you can see a work's sale history.
- Fair Estimate. For upcoming lots with a house estimate of $1,000 or more, a statistical model produces a value band shown next to the house estimate. It is a second opinion, not an appraisal, and the method is published.[11]
- Indexes. Five headline indexes (NEWGEN75, CONT500, PRINTS250, PHOTO150, PAINT200) track artist-level median prices at Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips and Bonhams, rebalanced each January. Method.
- Dated counts. The numbers on this page come from the live database and carry the date they were taken. We update them monthly.
